Skatopia 41 years later. These skateboarding pictures were shot by a young man in 1979 and printed by an old man in 2020. In fact, I shot these pictures back in 1979 at Skatopia skatepark in Buena Park California. At the present time, (yesterday to be more exact) I printed some images from my days at Skatopia. Generally speaking, I was a young man when I shot them and an old man when I printed them.
The negative held up well over the 41 years. And were stored in a southern California garage, under less than archival conditions. The camera was a used Nikkormat kit that I purchased from Chuck Lantz at Skatopia. And later sold it to Alfreda Reyes. I believe Alfredo still has this kit.
Yesterday I decided to print some old Skatopia pictures near the end of my darkroom session. And found Skatopia 41 years later.
So as I print and scan these old skateboarding pictures I will post them here and on kenhada.com. And if you are looking for more Skatopia pictures check here.
Photographer Ray Zimmerman is a misleading title, because Ray is photographer. In the first place he has made his living as a photographer his entire life. In the second place just have a look at his photography.
I first met Ray Zimmerman at Punkers pool ( a boutique made for skateboarding backyard pool) in Huntington Beach. I was shooting an
I had a long chat with Ray at the last Girls Combi Contest. And I asked him to do a podcast with me. I hope you get something out of our photography conversation that you can use in your own photography.

Skateboarding/earthquakes/the 4th of July. Apollo asked me if we could skateboard on the 4th of July. And even though I just came back from a camping trip(tent camping is harsh on old dudes like me) I said yes.
Oh yeah, on this day Ridgecrest California experienced a 6.6 earthquake. Everyone in the skatepark sat on the ground to experience the rolling sensation. Some of the older skateboarders thought they were experiencing severe dizziness.
Many people know Joe Wood from his days as
One of my first questions for Joe was “what have you been doing since 1978?”. Joe gave me his answer in the true all or nothing punk rock rocker/artist style. And so this podcast covers the days of giving Ray Bones a ride to Pipeline. And all of the rest from original punk rock daily to today.

And if you are into all things Skatopia be sure to check out Toby Woller podcast
Check out a Toby Woller podcast and Ken Hada. And it all happened just a few feet away from the location of the Skatopia. https://www.ihadaconversation.com/skateboarder-toby-woller/
The 2019 Venice Ladies Jam is a yearly skate event put on by people from the OG Jam series. Heidi Lemmon and Jeff Greenwood are always on hand to keep the event running smoothly. I always see Jim Gray, Cindy Whitehead and Ian Logan at this yearly jam. One can only imagine how much work it takes to put this skateboarding event. And you have to admire people who put on these smaller events.Because they seem to really love skateboarding.
This is a skateboarding contest. With divisions from teens skaters to 60-year-old. And what contest would be complete without celebrity judges. Lonnie Hiramoto was on hand as one of the judges, and to keep the stoke going for each and every skater. And our own Amy Pike Bradshaw attends this event every year.
And every year this event grows larger and larger. Every year more and more female staters attend the event. Which is a positive thing for the growth of women’s skateboarding.
In the end, the mark of a good skate event is overhearing people say “I can’t wait till next year”. At the close of this wonderful skateboarding event that sentiment was spoken by many.
